Have you ever taken out a new mobile phone contract, taking your old mobile phone number with you? If you have you may be familiar with the term 'porting' which means to take your phone number from your old mobile phone over to your new mobile phone.

To port your number over you will need to contact your network and request your PAC code. You can request your PAC code or Port Authorisation Code 30 days before your contract ends. You then need to give your PAC code to your new network within those last 30 days. If you do not port your number over within these 30 days your number will be lost. You will be paying for your final months line rental on your old contract so it is advisable to purchase your new contract approximately 1 - 2 weeks before the end of your contract to avoid paying for two contracts in one month.

O2 and Vodafone send out PAC codes within four to five days and Three and T-Mobile issue their PAC codes straight away. Unfortunately it seems that Orange are being very stubborn about giving out PAC codes to customers. Dealers are claiming that Orange staff have been forcing customers to wait 30 days before issuing their PAC code. This results in customers paying for an extra month line rental just so they can port over their telephone number.

Orange have stated that they issue PAC codes within two days, but this is not what customers have been reporting is actually happening. Orange have hit back by saying that they comply with the mobile number portability process manual and always stay within the guidelines.
